I never had an issue with my skin through the prime teen years when everyone was dealing with acne. I sort thought I was just one of the “lucky ones.” Maybe I was. But suddenly I hit my mid 20’s and started birthing babies. Still. No acne. No skin issues, whatsoever. I know what you’re thinking…what the heck is your point? Well I finally hit 30 and BAM! Here it came crashing down. Life hit me like a ton of bricks and boy did my skin retaliate.
- Rosacea
- Hormones
- Stress
- Sun Marks (that Florida living finally got to me!)
- Autoimmune Disease
I would go for a workout and I’d be the only one in the gym with a cherry as their face well after the workout was over. I couldn’t quite shake what was happening. I felt ashamed of how I looked day in and day out. Eventually, I became attached to filters in order to feel confident about showing my face on the internet. If that’s you too, I get it. I know what it feels like to feel the need for a filter or hating the way that your skin looks. Maybe you avoid family pictures because God forbid you show the real you. Suddenly your seemingly good confidence is shattered. You compare yourself to women all over the gram that have that picture perfect glow that you crave.
I never was one to make my skin a priority. Yes, I was the type of girl who would wear her makeup to bed without a care in the world. Well last year that changed when I realized that 1. I’m not getting any younger and 2. My skin needed something if I ever wanted to see any sort of change and improvement. So I dove deep into the webs of the internet and started researching some products. Some were great and some not so much.
After about a year and a half, I have found a skin routine that actually WORKS and is simple for the busy work from home mamapreneur. Yes, it’s possible to make this an easy part of your every day. Just to note: I have extremely sensitive skin so I have to be extremely cautious when putting anything on my skin. Most people don’t realize is that your skin is the largest organ of your entire body. What you put on your skin enters your body within seconds so INGREDIENTS MATTER! I don’t seek out the quick fix, but more products that offer lasting results over time that are also safe.
3 NATURAL REMEDIES FOR MY SKIN THAT I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT
Over the past 18 months I have tried and tested several different “organic” or “natural” brands on my skin to see what truly works. I promise you I play test dummy on me before ever sharing so you don’t have to do the heavy lifting. You’re welcome 😉 Here are 3 different things that I have done for my skin that have almost eliminated all hormonal acne or redness from my face to bring back life into my skin again.
1. Dietary Changes
Now, if you’ve been following my journey for a while now you will know that I once upon a time dealt with an eating disorder. So I definitely will never ever preach restriction or quick fix for the purpose of weight loss. However, since I have healed my mindset around food and this experiment was solely to heal my body from the inside out starting with my skin I knew some things needed to change. After visiting with my naturopathic doctor, he suggest I try the Autoimmune Protocol. I fought him tooth and nail on this one but it really helped me pin point what foods were causing breakouts and inflammation.
After a few grooling days of giving up things like dairy, nightshades, eggs, nuts, gluten, grains and a few other things, I realized that I needed to change up my diet to be cohesive with my overall well being.
The foods that I noticed causing the biggest issue for ME were: dairy, gluten and eggs. I’m not saying that I NEVER eat these anymore, I just now know to limit them or expect some sort of reaction if I decide to consume them.
Additionally I gave up things like corn and sugar since these are things that are known to cause more inflammation. And due to my fight with autoimmune conditions, this helps calm down my symptoms dramatically.
And finally, I started consuming liquid collagen. I had been taking the powdered form thinking it was the same but I hadn’t really experienced much results. Did you know that your body stops producing collagen after the age 20? Yeah, I know! Crazy. I began with Modere’s Liquid Biocell collagen and holy smokes just after a month or so I could already notice a huge difference. My hair was growing in fuller and thicker, my nails were growing in stronger than ever and I had the most insane energy. This is simply a supplement that I no longer want to live without.
2. Lifestyle Changes
Just like dietary changes, I knew I needed to adjust my lifestyle habits if I truly wanted to heal myself. So I began thinking of areas that I felt were out of balance.
For me those things were:
Sleep: In my previous life I worked night shift as a nurse and over time staying up excessively late became a habit. From late nights to study for nursing school exams to working night shifts to eventually staying up late nursing babies, I just sort of clung to late nights. Even with older kids and working during the day, I enjoy staying up late to have a few extra moments to sit in the calm house for a little “me” time. But it was wearing on my overall health. Little by little, I began going to bed earlier and working towards getting a full 7-8 hours every night.
Daily Movement: Movement has been a part of my life for the past 4 years or so. If I don’t move my body, my mental and physical health always seem a little out of whack so I try to make it a daily priority (even if it’s just a casual walk with my pups around the neighborhood.)
Drinking more Water: And I mean….a LOT of water. Did you know that you’re supposed to drink at minimum 1/2 your body weight in water every single day? I used to be “too busy” to get up to get a glass. Hey there, hyperfocus. I blame it on the ADHD in me. But for real, 1/2 your body weight and add more if you exercise. Your body will thank you. And so will your skin.
Supplements: I’m not a super big fan of swallowing pills and I definitely prefer to eat my vitamins but honestly, we don’t get everything we need so supplementing what I can’t get it super important. And all are not created equal. Some of my favorite things in my regiment currently are these Phytonutrients and this Trebiotic (it’s the only 3 in 1 on the market today and it’s INCREDIBLE especially if you have gut probs like myself.) Additionally I also take magnesium, zinc and Vitamin d3,b2.
3. Skincare Routine
Beyond making lifestyle and dietary changes, I made it part of my everyday to care for my most important organ on a daily basis. I thankfully found some products that really worked for my skin and have ingredients that I can feel good about using. Plus if my kids get into any of it (as they typically do), I can rest easy knowing it won’t harm their precious skin in any way.
Cellproof Double Cleanser: I’ll be honest that I tried at least a handful of other cleansers and none performed well. Until I landed on Modere’s double cleanser. It’s like this oil to foam formula and it does the job removing all the dirt and makeup but without stripping my skin. And it leaves my skin feel so ah-ma-zing!!!
Cellproof Serum: Not only does this stuff contain the ground breaking collagen, but you literally feel like you just spent a day at a spa….and say goodbye to that hormonal acne (like, for good!)
Cellproof Eye Cream: Remember how we talked about my fight with late nights? Well on those nights that the night wins, my tired mom eyes can be quite the sight. That’s where this stuff comes in. Dab this on and literally watch the puffiness disappear. It’s like magic!
Cellproof Infusion Mask: I saved the BEST for last! This stuff I didn’t really expect what happened. Dabbed it on for the first time and within seconds I felt my whole face bubbling up. It felt like a chemical peel but without the chemicals. It’s pretty darn crazy and the afterglow left me feeling like a dang goddess! So….there’s that!💁🏽♀️
And that’s it! If you’ve ever felt like you just struggle in the skin department, don’t lose hope. If I knew back in my teens or even 20’s that caring for your skin would be a thing of my future, I’d probably think you’re crazy…but here we are talking all things natural skincare.
These are my tips and tricks and I sincerely hope they help you as much as they have helped me. Give them a try and let me know what you think. These are what have given my skin life back again. I know it’s possible for you too – without wrecking your wallet and knowing the ingredients are all good for you is pretty dang great too!
