When I was a child and feeling very self-conscious or afraid, my grandmother used to tell me a story about a dragonfly. She told me of this little dragonfly that started life inside a tiny egg settled in a pool of water. It felt safe in it’s little egg submerged beneath the waves, safe but never free. One day, the egg started to feel more like confinement than safety and the dragonfly felt the call to spread its wings. Naturally with no outside influence, the dragonfly knew it was time to expand. Nothing would stop the beautiful dragonfly from experiencing life at its fullest potential and that meant letting go of the familiar to jump into the great big sky. All the dragonfly could do was believe its wings would carry her and fly her to her destiny. My grandmother reminded me constantly, “The dragonfly shines and sparkles and isn’t afraid of the unknown. She trusts in her wings.”

My grandmother passed just over a year ago, but her memory clings to my soul feeding me little stories when I need reminding, reminding that just like the dragonfly – I am capable of a beautiful transformations. You probably are thinking, Robin… aren’t you the coach? Why are you transforming anything? Well, my friends, the incredible thing about human beings is we are never truly done transforming. We are constantly learning, growing and becoming. We are continually unlearning, relearning, and discovering.
Transformation in the mainstream media looks like before and after pictures. It’s so appealing to think about evolving and changing as this is the old me and this is the “better version” of me. It’s crazy that billions of dollars are made around this very concept. Everyone is trying to fix themselves with this or that without ever really paying attention to what their body already knows or is asking for. We are always looking for the magic pill that will bring us everything we want, the perfect life or the perfect body or the perfect family.

No package or course or diet or supplement is going to make you transform. It’s already happening. We don’t need to learn how to transform ourselves. We need to dive inward and listen to what we already know to be true, to unlearn everything that we’ve been taught about transformation. We need to let go of this idea that there is a quick fix that leads to our perfect version of life. There will never be a quick fix. Transformation isn’t a one and done. It’s constant and innate; all we can do is control what comes from our transformations – will the results be a thing of beauty or will it be something detrimental? Will we learn and grow? Or will we perpetuate ignorance?
There is no perfection. That is an unattainable goal. The only thing for absolute certainty is that everything and everyone will change. Even the people we jokingly say “will never change.” They certainly do. Every person you meet, every situation you fall into, every decision made, changes you, transforms you. Listen to yourself, really listen. Set aside the fads and the diets and the life changing 1 month supply of whatever is popular right now, listen to what your body is telling you. It knows how to transform all on its own.
It’s comfortable to think someone else will have the answers for you. It’s comfortable to think you need to take something to make the changes you seek. But when you step out of the comfortable where you find true transformation, true beauty. When you find yourself uncomfortable, you may just start to feel your wings. And when you begin to trust yourself, you may just learn to fly.
